Commemorate the victims of the Holodomor

26.11.2022

Every year, on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukrainians commemorate the millions of victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and the mass artificially organized famines of 1921-1923 and 1946-1947.

In 2006, the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was recognized by the Law of Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

We commemorate the victims of genocide in the conditions of russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, which is also accompanied by practices of genocide against Ukrainians. Those who commit crimes against humanity must be condemned by the world community and the victims immortalized.

On November 16, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted its Appeal to the Parliaments of the World on the Recognition of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as Genocide of the Ukrainian People. The goal is to grab the international community attention to the tragedy and to recognize the historical parallels with the modern genocide of Ukrainians, which russia is trying to implement.

One of the key ways to honour the memory of those killed by famine is to join the “Light a Candle” campaign and call on Ukrainians and people around the world to light a candle in every house as manifestation of grief for the dead, faith in the victory of Ukraine and readiness to make efforts to prevent genocides from happening again.

On November 26 at 16:00 we will light candles and join in the nationwide moment of silence.
