The Council of Judges of Ukraine restricted access to public information by its decision

On March 25, 2022, an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Judges of Ukraine was held, during which it was decided to postpone until the end of the martial law in Ukraine, provision of responses to all requests for public information received since imposition of martial law in Ukraine – February 24, 2022.

“Because of the military aggression of the Russian state and its invader army against Ukraine, public information on the activities of state authorities, their employees, including in relation to courts and justice system bodies, may pose a threat to life and health of judges, employees of court’s apparatus, their relatives and close ones; cause crimes and be a threat to national security, therefore, is subject to restriction due to requirements relating to martial law. We cannot allow sensitive information of the justice system to be exploited by invaders, traitors and their henchmen,” said Bohdan Monich, Chairman of the Council of Judges of Ukraine.

As a result of the meeting, all 24 members of the CJU that took part in the meeting voted for the decision to restrict access to public information on the activities of the judiciary.

The Council of Judges of Ukraine decided:

1.                         All courts of Ukraine, the State Judicial Administration of Ukraine, and other institutions of the justice system to temporarily postpone until the expiration of martial law in Ukraine to provide responses to all requests for public information received from the beginning of imposition of martial law in Ukraine – February 24, 2022.

2.                          In the event of requests to provide any public information about activities of courts and institutions of the justice system, a copy of the requests should be immediately sent to the Security Service of Ukraine for thorough verification of persons collecting such information.
